This beautiful secretary desk comes from Germany and was made around 1820–1840. The piece is constructed from pine wood and veneered with high-quality mahogany veneer.
Upper Section – the so-called Tabernacle
The upper part features an impressive architectural superstructure in the form of a miniature temple (often referred to as a tabernacle or tempietto). It consists of a central cabinet with a “temple-style” façade and two cylindrical containers on either side, adorned with beautiful, original bronze handles.
This type of architectural superstructure was a symbol of prestige in the 19th century and was used exclusively in luxury furniture.
Secretary with a Pull-Out Drawer and Writing Surface
The wide upper drawer slides forward while simultaneously lowering the writing surface, which is upholstered in black leather. Two additional hinged side flaps extend the working surface.
Interior – Richly Equipped Drawers’ Section
When opened, a spectacular interior is revealed, featuring numerous small drawers, shelves, and a central compartment. The structure is supported by slender black columns — a characteristic detail of high-end Biedermeier furniture.
All internal drawers are veneered in mahogany. Many retain their original 19th-century keys and hardware.
Lower Section
The lower section contains three full-size, lockable drawers, veneered in flamed mahogany.
